Occupational therapists play a vital role in supporting those with a disability and older people; they help people to maintain and improve their independence and physical safety in some of life’s daily activities. We sat down with one of HenderCare’s occupational therapists, Rachel, to discuss in more detail what occupational therapy involves.
What is occupational therapy?
As an occupational therapist (OT), I work with people of varying physical capabilities to help them achieve effective participation in their day to day lives. This can be anything from helping people manage sensory information or managing limb problems right through to selecting appropriate assistive technology to promote independence.
What do you enjoy about your role?
As an OT, every client and every day is different. One day I can be assessing a client’s risk of falls and implementing strategies to prevent this risk and the next I am working with a client to help them reengage with a pastime they may have had to cease due to a physical limitation. The work is so rewarding; there is nothing better than seeing someone regain their independence and confidence.
What conditions do you treat?
We provide services to people with greatly varied physical conditions. In the aged care and disability space we are skilled at working with those with arthritis, head injuries, spinal cord trauma and progressive neurological conditions, but with no two clients the same, we are experienced in providing a range of treatments.
How do I find out more about your services?
